Note: Page numbers enclosed in parentheses are citations from The Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler: A systematic presentation in selections from his writings. (H. L. and R. R. Ansbacher, Eds.). © 1964, Harper & Row, Publishers, Inc. Used by permission of Perseus Books Group.

The Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler (Adler, 1964) contains, in excerpts throughout the text, accounts of Adler’s techniques of psychotherapy, or ways of understanding and treating the patient. Especially relevant is Chapter 13 (pp. 326-349), the Introduction, “Understanding the patient,” “Explaining the Patient to Himself,” “The Therapeutic Relationship,” and “Special Aspects and Techniques of Treatment.” Similarly, there are valuable examples of understanding and treating the patient throughout Superiority and Social Interest (Adler, 1979.) Also pertinent is Part III:  “Case Interpretation and Treatment” (pp.139-201), the Introduction, “Two Grade-School Girls,” “The Case of Mrs. A.,” and “Technique of Treatment.”

Rudolf Dreikurs (1973) systematized Adler’s work by identifying four phases of  psychotherapy: (a) rapport, or establishing and maintaining the therapeutic relationship; (b) investigation of the client’s past and present life situations and the client’s lifestyle; (c) interpretations and the development of the client self-understanding; and (d) reorientation. The “phases” are not set in a temporal sequence; they proceed in a logical order of primacy and dependency that pertains throughout the therapeutic encounter. By “rapport” is meant the alignment of goals of client and therapist. [See Lifestyle/Life-Style/Style of Living/Style of Life; Exogenous Factor.]

From the very beginning, the consultant must try to make clear that the responsibility for his cure is the patient’s business. . . . The adviser can only point out the mistakes, it is the patient who must make the truth living (p. 336).

The most trustworthy approaches to the exploration of personality are given in a comprehensive understanding of (1) the earliest of childhood memories [early recollections], (2) the position of the birth order, (3) childhood disorders [organ inferiority; overburdening childhood situations], (4) day and night dreams, and (5) the nature of the exogenous factor (pp. 327-328).

[The client’s] apperception-schema must always be traced and unmasked as being immature and untenable but suited to the purpose of continued fighting (p. 333).

A real explanation must be so clear that the patient knows and feels his own experience instantly (p. 335).

The increased insight into himself then stands like a guardian over the patient and forces him to find more useful paths for his desire to be above, and to dampen his depreciation tendency (p. 357).

In practice, we attempt to undo the great errors, to substitute smaller errors, and to reduce these further until they are no longer harmful (p. 187).

The cure or reorientation is brought about by a correction of the faulty picture of the world and the unequivocal acceptance of a mature picture of the world (p. 333).

Nobody who has understood anything of Individual Psychology would attempt to cure by unbraiding the patient as if we could do good by taking up a moralistic attitude. A patient has to be brought into such a state of feeling that he likes to listen, and wants to understand. Only then can he be influenced to live what he has understood (p. 335).

In every step of treatment, we must not deviate from the path of encouragement (p. 342).

During this consultation hour, Drs. Carlson and Colker continue to discuss the case of Archie, who was presented during the previous consultation hour (see Adlerian Consultation Hour with Drs. Jon Carlson and Jay Colker- 03-01-2016 for original case). In order to help Dr. Carlson gain new insight into the case, Dr. Colker assumed the role of the clinical supervisor.

Client, Archie, is a 31-year old male who is currently married and has a one year old child, and the client grew up in the Louisiana oil field. As an early adult the client saw a machine ‘eat up’ a good friend and the friend lost his life. The client moved to the Midwest to come live with family, and shortly after the family kicked him out to live in the street. The client was demonstrating depressive symptoms, anxiety, and somatic complaints.  The client described his father as abusive, self- centered, and aggressive. He described his mother as the opposite, excessively loving. Dr. Jay Colker and Dr. Jon Carlson discuss the client and possible explanations of the client’s behavior. In addition, possible treatment plans were discussed for the client. Dr. Colker suggests taking a positive approach with the client and mentioning to Archie how successful he has been so far with his situations and his decisions.

Adlerian Consultation Hour with Drs. Jon Carlson and Jay Colker (01-26-2016)
During this consultation hour, an overview of Adlerian case conceptualization is provided. Examples of common questions an Adlerian therapist may use in session are then provided. Video Length: 56:01 Key Words: family constellation, family relationships, birth order, case conceptualization, early recollection

The second section includes information gathered about the client's family constellation, including birth order, significant role models, and parent-child interactions. Early memories are also examined. The last section is an integration of the first two. Specifically, the counselor attempts to draw connections between the here-and-now and the family data. Dr. Jon Carlson then provides examples of common questions an Adlerian therapist would ask during a counseling session. Finally, Dr.  Colker briefly describes common characteristics of birth order positions.

They report some studies that support this approach as well as others that were nonsignificant. Sadie “Tee” Dreikurs: Partner In History A Video Documentary
In 1986, Sadie “Tee” Dreikurs was interviewed on video about her life and career. The resulting two-part documentary movie premiered at the first annual Founder’s Day at the Alfred Adler Institute of Chicago, February 8, 1987 to great acclaim. (It won a Chicago International Film Festival Certificate of Merit in 1987). It is an engaging companion piece to her book, Cows Can Be Purple, published in the same year. The video was subsequently sold to libraries, schools, and individuals. NASAP and the Alfred Adler Institute of Chicago (now Adler University) were co-sponsors of this production. Tee’s personal accomplishments as an artist and fascinating connection to Jane Addams and Hull House, and then her Adlerian career as Rudolf Dreikurs’ wife and collaborator form the two parts of the movie. The movie’s sample enactment of Tee’s invention of Adlerian Art Therapy, with her extensive commentary, has been in use in psychology graduate classrooms. Now, after over thirty years, the video has been digitized and is ready for even wider circulation.

Developmental Conceptualization of Symptoms and Diagnoses of Children and Youth With Karen John
Part of the 2019-2020 Webinar Series.

Parents, teachers, and social care, health, and other professionals often have little appreciation for the normative developmental needs of children and young people, and how these conflict with social expectations and demands. Reviewing the bio-psycho-social preoccupations and challenges commonly associated with specific age ranges, and juxtaposing these with the ages at which behavioral and emotional symptoms and diagnoses first or commonly are noted can sharpen and shift perspectives and approaches. A developmental model and alternative case conceptualizations of diagnoses of children and youth will be presented by Dr. Karen John, psychologist, who is an independent researcher, training consultant, Adlerian psychotherapist, and a clinical and leadership supervisor and mentor.

Dr. John’s expertise is in developmental Psychology, Mental Health & Mental Illness, Social Functioning & Wellbeing, Basic & Applied Research, and Leadership. Over the past 25 years she has developed and facilitated leadership and work-based supervision programs throughout England, acting as an organizational consultant to leaders and teams involved in integrating educational, social care, health, and community services for children and families. She is a VP of Adlerian society of UK and Institute for IP, board member of ICASSI< and member of many organizations.
