This paper presents an encapsulation of research literature delineating characteristics of healthy families and offers them as a brief model of family systems with elevated social interest. Characteristics of Heal thy Families as a Model of Social Interest Family research literature, historically speaking, has primarily focused on characteristics and symptomatology of dysfunc tional families. Addressing only negative aspects of family functioning, however. provides an unbalanced presentation. Every family has strengths and liabilities. Assisting fami lies in movement toward health requires an understanding of strengths in order to build on those assets in overcoming limitations. Stinnett (1985) addressed the myopia of viewing family process from a dysfunctional model alone.
