Subjective Final Goal/Guiding Self Ideal

Fictional Finalism always confused me. My understanding is Adler moved away from this original concept. Watts (2014) in an article entitled "Why Continue to Use Fictional Finalism?"explains the construct and mentions alternate terms to be used but I still remain confused. Isn't this what we should be uncovering for the client in therapy? Aren't we supposed to bring awareness to this very thing so they gain insight and can try something new? Shouldn't we reveal the patterns of how they attempt to belong/be significant and how that belief system is leading to repetition of patterns that aren't working very well? Help me understand this better PLEASE!
It was the word "fictional" that he moved away from. The psychological meanings the word (subjective, created, unconscious) still remained in his subsequent terms.
